The Quack and the Great Physician
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:6 and Proverbs 17:22
Series: Comments on Galatians
My blood pressure was up one time and the doctor wanted me to take pills. He did not ask a single question about how I was feeling, my diet, sleep, stresses. He just wanted to write a prescription. In the weeks that followed, my blood pressure was great.
My blood pressure will not be great every time I see a doctor. I am getting old; stuff happens to these bodies. By realizing this, I do not get excited, but take a little extra care with my sleep and diet. Doing so, I take a step toward recovery.
Just so, when we sin, we must understand that while in these bodies, we will break down sometimes. This is no cause for excitement. We simply confess our sin and realize that our Savior is merciful, that eternal life does not depend upon us being perfect but him being perfectly gracious toward we sinners.
Often enough, that quack practitioner insists that we need to do this or that to fix our condition. What we really need is a great and heavenly physician who truly understands the human condition, and who is himself our medicine.
