The Contrast
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:9 and John 3:18–19
Series: Comments on Galatians
Light versus darkness: there is no competition. Light dispels darkness but darkness can do nothing to the light (John 1:5). The contrast shows us that those who would be in darkness simply want no part in the light. On the other hand, those who desire light see it dispel the darkness; it can do no other.
Jesus is the light come into the world (John 1:9) and for all who receive him, he gives the right to be the children of God, children who are called out of darkness into his marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). Those who will not receive him, however, are already condemned to remain in deep darkness by their unbelief, an eternity without the Light of the World. Those who will not believe in Jesus Christ condemn themselves to the darkness.
