Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:10 and John 4:23–24
Series: Comments on Galatians
We must be careful that we do not worship God through our own inventions of religion. Let us imagine that someone began teaching that the true church worships only on their knees. This new and improved church kneels and walks on their knees and with head properly bowed from the moment each worshiper comes through the front door until they leave the building. It seems absurd but is nonetheless conceivable that such a congregation could exist. The pastor could claim Psalm 95:6 tells all Christians to worship this way, and that if you do not, you are not a real Christian.
This sort of church is easily found, churches where one must read only a certain translation of the Bible, speak in tongues, or even dress a certain way — or you are not a real Christian. Ironically, these are the congregations who are not being true to God, for they do not worship him in spirit and in truth. They rely upon human inventions where they ought to trust in Christ alone. This trust comes by God’s grace through faith, not by works of human invention.
