Honoring God
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:6 and Romans 4:9–12
Series: Comments on Galatians
Luther said that the Lutherans preached justification by faith every week because the people forgot it every week. And so, his Galatians commentary (and Galatians itself) is filled with teaching about justification by faith. People are justified to God, not by circumcision (as was the problem in Galatia) or any other work of the law but, by faith in Christ’s work on the cross. We must always look to Christ, especially when we find ourselves so unable to keep the law. Though we try, we fail. Yet Christ Jesus has not failed us, and has justified those with faith in him, even though their works do not always shine gloriously. By believing in Christ, they give God the glory, and so, honor him instead of themselves. This satisfies God and counts for righteousness.
