Numbers 31–32

Scripture Text: Numbers 31:1–32:42

Series: Read the Bible in a Year

Because the Midianites had seduced Israel into idolatry, Moses is commanded to avenge the people. Along with the Midianite kings, other men, including their pagan prophet Balaam (of earlier in our readings) were put to the sword. But they spared the women as part of their plunder. Moses was furious that they spared the very ones who had seduced them into idolatry.

Moses arrives at a solution that seems troubling to us but that may teach us a valuable lesson. When we sin, we must get rid of all of its accoutrements. As much as possible, the temptations must be killed along with the sin, else sin is likely to return.

Reuben and Gad seem content this side of the Jordan. Terms must be agreed upon: that they still join Israel in taking the land. To do otherwise would be to sin against God and their brothers.
