Numbers 26–27
Scripture Text: Numbers 26:1–27:23
Series: Read the Bible in a Year
Facing a large, military maneuver in Canaan, Moses is told to take a second census. We must note that it is Eleazar, Aaron's son, the new high priest, who assists with the count. Aaron did not survive the wilderness, not did Miriam, or the others who had seen God's glory and miracles in the wilderness, yet still disobeyed and rebelled so many times (Numbers 14:22–23). All these died in the wilderness (Numbers 14:28–30). At the point of the census, Caleb and Joshua alone remain with Moses. Chapter 27 records how many fighting men remain from each tribe, and details how and why many died in the wilderness. Nonetheless, 601,730 are numbered: less than five percent fewer than the previous census.
Chapter 27 begins with rights of inheritance. After all, they are about to take the promised land. Many "what ifs" may be occurring to people. If someone's father die in the wilderness, what would their inheritance of the promised land be?
The remainder of the chapter is a reminder of Moses' great sin at Meribah, what the consequence would now be, and who would now lead the people into the land.
