The More Excellent Sacrifice.
Comments on Galatians with an ear to Luther’s commentary
Scripture Text: Galatians 3:10 and Hebrews 11:4–6
Series: Comments on Galatians
How is it that Abel pleased the Lord? Was it because his offering was better than Cain’s? No; it was because his heart was better. And the heart is what makes the offering pleasing. Look no further than Christ’s example of the widow’s mite. Was her offering better than that of others in the temple? Their offerings were undoubtedly greater in terms of human value but not in heaven’s estimation. God does not regard silver or gold but the heart that gives just a penny.
The widow gave from the heart, as did Abel. The offering of faith, though it be a small, tarnished coin, is accepted while gold and silver given by the merely religious person is an unacceptable sacrifice. The offerings of faith are the more excellent sacrifice.
